There are multiple reasons why your house may have more dust than normal in the winter months. In the winter months, you obviously will be running your heat to stay warm. Little do people know that this causes your house to have more dust. The warm dry air causes your skin to flake off and creates dust. Pet hair and dander can also add to your dust problems. Burning wood in the fireplace is an ideal way to heat up during the winter, but also adds to the dust problem in your home. Ash will fly around your home regardless whether you see it or not.
Here are a few steps that you can do to prevent dust buildup in your home.
- Vacuum and steam your carpets – Carpet is the place dust goes to live. The carpet keeps dust trapped in its fibers. If you want less dust, then deep clean your carpet.
- Clean surfaces within microfiber towels – Microfiber towels attract dust particles and keeps them on the towel itself. Cleaning with a paper towel captures some dust, but it is mostly pushing the dust around.
- Replace your air filter – When is the last time you replaced your air filter? Most people fail to replace their filter with the recommended time frames as labelled on the packaging. Some people also purchase the cheapest filter possible. This can lead to a dust problem in your home. Upgrade your filter in your home and change them out as the packaging suggests. The brands have done their testing and know when the filter begins to fail. Leaving a filter in too long puts a strain on your system and leads to a shorter life span for your system. This can be an expensive mistake.
- Use your dryer to dust – Grab your pillowcases, curtains, blankets, and any other items that aren’t washed often and place them in the dryer. These items attract and trap dust. Wash these items twice a year if possible. If you cannot wash them, throw them in a dryer with a damp towel. The moisture will attract pet hair and the air movement will rid the items of smaller particles.
- Ditch your carpet – Carpet is the biggest dust catcher in your home. Not only by upgrading to another type of flooring will it rid you of this dust problem, but it can also increase the value of your home.
