Kids are very creative while choosing a tool to display their artwork on walls! 😊This can make cleaning walls very tricky. You obviously want to clean the wall and not remove the paint! Here’s how to clean the walls without damaging the paint.
The type of paint determines how it will stand up to washing. If inside a room, the paint is typically a flat or eggshell finish and not as durable. The type of paint will rub off if scrubbed too hard and with certain chemicals. Semi-gloss will be able to take more aggressive techniques.
Work your way down the list until the stain is removed. Start with the mild and gentle techniques and then on to the more abrasive techniques. Be sure to dry the wall after cleaning to prevent water damage.
1. The first chemical to use should be good old-fashioned water. Water is the gentlest cleaner available. Run water over a rag and blot the spot. Trying lightly rubbing the area if blotting does not work.
2. Dish soap and water should be your next option. Pour some water in a bucket and squirt some dish soap and stir to combine the two. Use a rag or sponge to blot and rub the mark. If this doesn’t work, move on down.
3. Measure out ¼ cup of baking soda and mix it with 1 quart of water. Dip your rag or sponge in the mixture and blot and the rub the area to remove the mark. Try a sponge if the rag does not do the trick.
4. Add ½ cup of white vinegar, 1 cup of ammonia, and 3 more quarts (4 quarts, 1 gallon total) to your above mixture. Mix well and then try using your rag or sponge to clean the mark.
5. Make a paste of baking soda and water. This mixture is going to be slightly abrasive and may cause paint removal if too aggressive.
6. Mr. Clean Magic Erasers are the final option. These are awesome for many uses. Wet the eraser and start lightly rubbing the mark. This will likely work and like the above mixture, cause paint removal if too aggressive.
